Chauffeur travel is oddly badly documented. The information that would actually help someone choose — how a quotation is built, why one airport is harder than another, what a saloon really carries, how a wedding morning is sequenced — is mostly locked in the heads of the people who do the work.

This is our attempt to write it down. Every page here answers one question, puts the answer near the top, and is willing to tell you when a chauffeur is not what you need. There are no prices anywhere, because we do not work from a rate card and inventing one would be dishonest.

Nothing here requires you to book anything. If it saves you a phone call, it has done its job.

Questions people genuinely ask before booking are what organise the journal. London pieces cover neighbourhoods, dining and the practicalities of getting around the centre. Airport guides deal with terminals and timing. There are private aviation notes, a run through the British season, escapes and touring routes across the country, plus a set of pieces on choosing between chauffeur-driven cars once the specifications all start to sound alike.

Selling a particular booking is not what any of this is for. A guide willing to tell you the train would serve you better, or that the smaller car is the sensible choice, is worth more than one that will not, and being trusted matters to us rather more than being agreed with. Anything that comes down to opinion is written as opinion. Where a timing varies, it gets described as variable instead of quietly rounded down.

Set beside the service pages, the journal exists to make an enquiry shorter, not longer. By the point you send a message you ought to know roughly what shape of booking suits you, which car goes with it, and what to include: the date, the timings, both addresses, passenger and luggage numbers, plus any flight number, since that lets us plan around the published schedule.
