From there the hotels around St Peter's Square, King Street and Deansgate are minutes off. Awkward jobs we take on too: the Old Trafford approach on a matchday, the Etihad Campus, and those private clubs behind unmarked doors in the Northern Quarter that no navigation app ever finds cleanly.
Plenty lies within easy reach. Half an hour south sit the Cheshire villages of Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Knutsford, holding some of the best restaurants in the north. Inside the hour you are into the Peak District, the Lake District makes a comfortable morning's drive, and Liverpool is near enough that a two-city weekend becomes genuinely simple. Chatsworth, Tatton Park and the Yorkshire Dales all work as day returns without any sense of rush.
Twenty to thirty minutes separates Manchester Airport from the city centre outside peak hours, and arrivals are met inside the terminal, not out in a car park. By road from London it is the M1 and M6, four to five hours as a rule, according to how the Midlands behave. Plenty of guests would rather take the train with a car waiting at Piccadilly; others enjoy the drive north with a proper stop arranged along the way.

How Manchester actually moves
The M60 shapes everything. It is the orbital that knits the M62, the M6 and the M56 into one loop, and it absorbs the overflow every time the centre seizes up. Coming in, most traffic is funnelled down Regent Road or along the Mancunian Way, and at the wrong hour either can hold you for twenty minutes with nowhere to go. Trinity Way and the northern approaches often serve you better, which is why your chauffeur waits until the day to choose rather than repeating whatever worked on the last visit.
Distance is not the problem in the middle of town. Stopping is. Deansgate, King Street and a good deal of the Northern Quarter give you almost no kerb you can legitimately use, and the tram alignments swallow what little remains. So we settle two points in advance: where you step out, and where the car sits afterwards, usually a quiet side street within walking distance. Greater Manchester's clean air arrangements have gone through more than one revision, so where a charge applies to the vehicle you have booked, it goes into the quotation and is confirmed at booking.
Junction five of the M56 puts you at the airport, twenty-five to forty minutes out of the centre depending on when you set off. Its terminals stand far enough apart that turning up at the wrong one will cost you real time. What tends to be harder is anywhere the railway does not reach. Cheadle Royal, Towers Business Park, Birchwood at Warrington and the units tucked behind Trafford Park each sit an awkward distance from everything else. From London, the M1 and then the M6 normally takes four to five hours, traffic allowing.

When Manchester gets busy
Two windows will cost you time on almost any weekday: the morning run in, and the four-to-seven stretch at the other end. Friday afternoons on the M60 beat both for sheer misery. Add a home fixture, an arena night, or one of the bigger conferences at Manchester Central and the university venues, and demand climbs right across the city. Those dates go first. A midweek request at short notice can often be met; a Saturday during the season very rarely can.
Book earliest for graduation weeks, for the Christmas markets once they open in mid-November, and for the long string of party nights that fills December. Winter changes the driving too. Snow can shut the Pennine routes east and the moorland roads out towards the Peak, so we build extra margin into early departures, and if your schedule looks optimistic we will say so rather than let you discover it on the day.
