The A23 into Brighton is fast until Patcham and then becomes a city road, with the Preston Park and London Road stretch queueing through the day and badly at the evening peak. Southbound on a hot summer Saturday the whole corridor from the M23 can crawl. The A27 across the top of the city is the route for Lewes, Shoreham and the Downs, and its junctions at Falmer and Hollingbury are the slow points, particularly around football fixtures at the stadium.

Event weekends close the seafront outright. The marathon in spring, the pride parade in the summer and several road races and cycling events each take out the A259 and parts of the centre for most of a day, and the diversions are long. We check the closures before quoting a timing and set collection points well clear of the barriers. Racecourse meetings above the town fill Elm Grove and Bear Road, and graduation weeks fill the hotels and the roads around them.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
