A private tour is really an exercise in not being rushed. You leave when you are ready, stay somewhere longer because it turned out to be worth it, and skip the thing that looked better in the brochure than in the rain. Lunch happens where you feel like stopping. The car is waiting whenever you come back to it.

We suggest itineraries because most people want a starting point, not because the day has to run that way. Tell us what interests you — architecture, gardens, whisky, walking, somewhere a grandparent came from — and we will shape the route around it and tell you honestly what fits into the daylight you have.

Your chauffeur is a professional driver rather than a licensed guide. They know the roads, the parking, the quiet approach and the time it takes between places, and they will happily point things out along the way — but they will not deliver commentary. Admission tickets are booked by you. We are glad to advise on timed-entry slots and what they mean for the shape of the day, since several of the best places sell out weeks ahead and a badly chosen slot can undo an otherwise perfect route.

Cramming too much in is the mistake nearly everyone makes. Britain looks small and drives large. Distances are modest, the roads are anything but, and an afternoon lost to some beautiful valley usually turns out to be the best part of a trip. Two or three substantial stops make a satisfying day, as a rule. Where a proposed route would leave you looking through glass for most of it, we say so plainly.

Days, not miles, are what touring is priced on. Car and chauffeur are held for the hours you agreed, with a sensible allowance made for the geography involved. Rest and accommodation for the chauffeur go into any multi-day itinerary, which is the reason a week is quoted whole instead of as seven separate days. If a route would push past safe driving hours, we plan around that in advance and tell you why.
