Villages of honey limestone lie in folds of hill all the way from Chipping Campden down to Tetbury, the pubs keep rooms worth staying in, and the country house hotels have made this the most reliably beautiful weekend in England. Guests arrive for weddings, for anniversaries, for autumn shooting weekends, and for the pleasure of doing very little very slowly with the phone abandoned upstairs.

First thing to grasp: no single arrival point exists here. Ten to twenty minutes separate one village from the next along single-track lanes between high hedges, without a lamp anywhere, and gravel drives always run longer than they look. A chauffeur for the day sorts it out. Hotel in the morning, lunch somewhere with a view, an afternoon in Stow or Burford, dinner elsewhere, and nobody counting the wine.

On the eastern edge sit Blenheim Palace and Oxford, Bath and Cheltenham to the south west, Stratford-upon-Avon just north. The picture-postcard work falls to Bourton-on-the-Water, Bibury and Broadway, while Kingham, Chipping Norton and the villages nearby take care of the eating. Cirencester and Tetbury anchor the southern end, and you can cross the whole region in about an hour.

Depending which village you are bound for, Heathrow takes an hour and a half to two and a half hours, while Birmingham is often quicker for the northern Cotswolds at roughly an hour. Out of London, the M40 to Oxford and then along the A40 generally asks two to three hours. Direct trains from Paddington reach Kingham and Moreton-in-Marsh, and we meet them.
