Honey limestone villages sit in folds of hill from Chipping Campden down to Tetbury, the pubs have rooms worth staying in, and the country house hotels have made this the most reliably beautiful weekend in England. Guests come for weddings, for anniversaries, for shooting weekends in autumn, and for the pleasure of doing very little extremely slowly with the phone left somewhere upstairs.

There is no single arrival point here, which is the first thing to understand. Villages sit ten to twenty minutes apart along single-track lanes with high hedges and no lighting whatsoever, and gravel drives run longer than they look. A chauffeur for the day resolves it: hotel in the morning, lunch somewhere with a view, an afternoon in Stow or Burford, dinner elsewhere, and nobody counting glasses of wine.

Blenheim Palace and Oxford sit on the eastern edge, Bath and Cheltenham to the south west, and Stratford-upon-Avon just to the north. Bourton-on-the-Water, Bibury and Broadway do the picture-postcard work, while Kingham, Chipping Norton and the villages around them handle the eating. Cirencester and Tetbury anchor the southern end, and the whole region can be crossed in about an hour.

Heathrow is typically an hour and a half to two and a half hours depending on which village you are heading for, and Birmingham is often quicker for the northern Cotswolds at around an hour. From London the M40 to Oxford and out along the A40 usually takes two to three hours. Kingham and Moreton-in-Marsh have direct trains from Paddington and we meet them.
