The rear Theatre Screen folds down from the roof lining across nearly a metre and a half of display — genuinely striking, and useful on longer journeys. Rear seats recline, and the Executive Lounge configuration turns the offside rear into something close to a flat bed.

Set against the S-Class, the trade is refinement style rather than refinement quantity. The Mercedes isolates you from an engine that is still there; the BMW has nothing to isolate you from, which produces a cleaner sort of quiet but also makes tyre roar on coarse northern motorway surfaces slightly more audible. Neither is better in the abstract. If your day is city-shaped, the i7 wins comfortably. If it is four hundred motorway miles, we would still point you at the Mercedes.
Battery packaging explains why capacity stops at two large cases and two cabin bags rather than exceeding it. The load area is a good square shape and takes hard cases neatly, but there is no cavernous surprise waiting under the floor.
