Most of Britain is genuinely better reached by road. The train serves the big city centres well and everywhere else poorly, and the last twenty minutes of a journey — the part that ends at a country house, a village hotel or a wedding venue down a lane — is exactly the part it cannot do at all.

Planning a Journey Out of London
Beyond the capital, a job gets quoted as one complete movement, never by the mile. Into the figure go the outward drive, whatever waiting happens while you are somewhere, and the return, which is precisely why a day trip and an overnight come out at different prices. If the car has to run back empty, that appears in the quotation honestly instead of surfacing later on. Multi-day journeys carry the chauffeur's own accommodation and rest as well.
How far you go decides which car is worth taking. Under an hour, almost anything feels comfortable enough. Push past three and the seat becomes the entire experience, so the money is better spent on a luxury saloon than saved on the executive one. Families and groups ought to be counting cases, not seats: a people carrier that swallows the luggage puts an end to the argument that otherwise breaks out on the driveway.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.
Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.

London and the South East account for most starting points, though Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Cardiff come up often, along with everywhere in between. Touring itineraries running several days take us through the Cotswolds, the Lake District, Scotland and Wales.
Two large suitcases plus two or three cabin bags sit comfortably in a luxury saloon. Step up to a luxury MPV and you have room for five or six large cases with cabin bags besides. Count yours exactly before you enquire, and mention the awkward items, golf clubs, skis, instruments, a pushchair, so we can point you at the right vehicle.
Every quotation carries a sensible allowance, and airport collections get a longer one than a city pickup, simply because arrivals refuse to run to a timetable. How much that allowance is, and what happens once it runs out, appears in writing at the point of booking. A delay should never bring a surprise with it.
