Child seats generate more anxious messages than any other subject in chauffeur travel, and usually late in the evening before an early flight. The anxiety is understandable and mostly avoidable: the rules are clear, the practical constraints are few, and the whole thing is settled by a couple of numbers sent at the booking stage rather than negotiated on a doorstep at dawn.

What follows covers the legal position in the United Kingdom, including the exemption that applies to licensed private hire vehicles and why we do not treat it as a licence to skip a seat, then the practical business of which vehicles take which seats and how the fitting works on the day. It is written for parents rather than for lawyers.

The legal position in brief

In the United Kingdom a child must normally use an appropriate child restraint until they are twelve years old or one hundred and thirty-five centimetres tall, whichever comes first, after which an adult seat belt is used. Seats are approved either by height, under the newer i-Size framework, or by weight under the older group system, and both remain in lawful use side by side.

Licensed taxis and private hire vehicles carry an exemption where no correct seat is available, which allows a child of three or over to travel in the rear using an adult belt, and a child under three to travel in the rear unrestrained. It exists so that nobody is stranded at the roadside, not so that a booked journey can be planned around it in advance.

We treat it as a fallback rather than a plan. If we know a child is travelling and how big they are, the correct seat can be arranged or your own can be fitted, and that is plainly better than relying on a provision designed for a taxi flagged down in the rain. The exemption is worth knowing about and very much worth not needing.

Bringing your own, or asking for one

Both work, and the choice is genuinely yours. Your own seat is the one your child is used to, the one you know is undamaged and correctly sized, and the one you can fit in your sleep. Against that, it has to travel with you on the outbound leg, take up boot space on the way back, and be carried through an airport if you are flying anywhere.

A seat provided for the journey removes all of that, and needs the child's age together with weight and height rather than a description such as toddler. Nothing else identifies the right stage of seat. Where a family travels out and back with days in between, saying so matters, because the arrangement for each leg is often different. Both legs are worth stating explicitly.

  • Each child's age, and their weight and height where known
  • The stage needed: infant carrier, toddler seat or high-back booster
  • Whether you are bringing your own seats or would like them arranged
  • How many seats have to sit side by side in one row
  • Whether a rear-facing seat is involved
  • Whether the seats travel with you on the return leg as well

Which vehicles take which seats

Most modern chauffeur vehicles have Isofix anchor points on the outer rear seats, and many have a top tether as well, though the arrangement varies by model and specification and should never be assumed. Belt-fitted seats work in almost any position with a lap and diagonal belt. The middle rear seat of a saloon frequently lacks Isofix and is the least useful place for a seat in any case.

Rear-facing seats need depth, and a large one behind a tall driver can push the front seat further forward than is comfortable. In a saloon that is a real constraint; in a luxury MPV it is not, because the second-row armchairs have space ahead of them and the fixings are easy to reach. Three seats across a single row is generally an MPV job rather than a saloon one.

One rule has no exceptions worth discussing: a rear-facing seat must never be used in a front passenger seat while the airbag is active. In practice children travel in the rear of a chauffeur car regardless, which is both the safer place and the more practical one for loading, fastening and getting everybody out again at the other end. It is mentioned only because the question comes up.

Fitting, checking and time on the day

Fitting takes minutes rather than seconds, and it takes longer in the rain with a toddler waiting. Chauffeurs allow for it and arrive early enough that nobody is rushed, but the schedule needs the same allowance at your end. If you are bringing your own seat, the quickest approach is usually to fit it yourself while the chauffeur loads the luggage, since you already know the routine.

Whoever fits it, check it before the car moves. A chauffeur will happily do all of this and will not be remotely offended by a parent checking afterwards, because a second pair of eyes on a child seat is never unwelcome. The points below take about twenty seconds to run through and are the same ones a fitting service would look at.

  • The base sits firm, with very little sideways movement
  • Harness straps lie flat and are not twisted anywhere
  • Shoulder straps sit level with or just above the shoulders
  • The buckle is clear of the seat frame and easy to release
  • Nothing heavy or loose sits on the shelf behind the seat

Space, and what a seat costs you

Child seats occupy adult seats, which is the arithmetic families most often miss. Two child seats in the back of a saloon leaves one narrow middle position that an adult will not enjoy for long. Add a pushchair to the boot and the vehicle that looked adequate on paper stops being adequate in the street outside your house at six o'clock in the morning.

The recommendation for two or more children is usually a luxury MPV, and not only for the seats. It gives each child their own space, keeps the gangway clear so a parent can reach a child mid-journey, and takes the pushchair, the travel cot and the cases without any of it riding in the cabin. A saloon is fine for one child and a small bag.

Getting it confirmed in advance

Send the numbers when you book rather than the week before. Ages, weights and heights, the number of seats, whether they are yours or ours, and whether they are needed in both directions. That message is short, and it decides the vehicle, the fitting arrangement and the amount of time built into the schedule at the collection address. Everything downstream depends on it.

Seats are subject to availability like everything else. Vehicles come from our own cars and from a vetted network of professional chauffeur operators, and Isofix provision and seat layout vary between individual cars, so both are confirmed with the booking rather than assumed at enquiry. Ask on WhatsApp or by email and you will get a straight answer for your date.

Why Luxury Chauffeurs

Why Choose Luxury Chauffeurs

  • 01

    Held, not hailed

The car is reserved against your name for the whole booking. Nothing is pooled, nothing is reallocated, and no algorithm decides who arrives at your door.

  • 02

    Priced in writing

Distance, duration, vehicle and timing are worked out before you commit, then confirmed in writing, so the figure you agree is the figure for the journey.

  • 03

    London and beyond

A short run across Mayfair and an unhurried drive to the Highlands are arranged with the same care, by the same people, under one booking.

  • 04

    Discretion as habit

Unbranded vehicles, chauffeurs who speak only when spoken to, and a rear compartment where a confidential call needs no lowering of the voice.

Four Steps

How Booking Works

Chauffeur booking with us is a conversation rather than a checkout. Every journey is priced individually.

  1. 01

    Tell us the journey

Send the date, the addresses and the shape of the day on WhatsApp, or use the journey planner. There is no obligation and no card details are taken to get a price.

  2. 02

    We quote in writing

You receive a written quotation covering the vehicle, the timings and everything included — no estimates that move later, and no surge pricing.

  3. 03

    The car is held

On confirmation a vehicle and a named professional chauffeur are assigned to your date, and the terms are put in writing.

  4. 04

    Your chauffeur arrives

Briefed on the route, the access and the waiting arrangements before the day, so nothing is decided at the kerb.

Corporate & Business

Business Travel Across Britain

Corporate chauffeur work runs to a diary rather than a postcode. Meetings overrun, a signing drags past six, and the airport leg still has to make check-in. Because the vehicle is committed to your booking, a revised plan costs a message rather than a fresh price. Accounts can be arranged so individual travellers never handle payment, and the paperwork is kept plain enough for a finance team to reconcile without chasing anybody.

The rear compartment is treated as a working space. Cabins are quiet enough for a confidential call, papers can stay open on the seat between stops, and chauffeurs understand that what is overheard is not repeated. Roadshows, board visits and conference movements involving several cars are coordinated centrally, so one person holds the schedule and one thread carries every change to it.

Before You Send

What to Tell Us

None of it is compulsory. The more you include, the sooner we can reply with a firm written price rather than a question.

  1. 01

    Where and when

Pickup and destination addresses, the date, and the time you need to arrive rather than leave.

  2. 02

    Who is travelling

Passenger numbers, large cases and cabin bags, and the ages of any children so we fit the right seats.

  3. 03

    The shape of the day

One journey, a return, or a car held for several hours. Say if the timings might move.

  4. 04

    Flight or event details

A flight number lets us plan around the published schedule; an event name tells us which gate and which traffic plan.

  5. 05

    Vehicle preference

A category is enough — or ask us to recommend one for the party and the distance.

  6. 06

    Anything else

Accessibility requirements, a preferred route, a stop on the way, or a quiet car with no conversation.

Professional Chauffeur Standards

The Standard We Hold

What a premium chauffeur service should mean in practice, rather than in a brochure.

  • Vetted professional chauffeurs

Every chauffeur is licensed, insured and vetted before they drive for us. They are briefed on your journey in advance and dressed for the occasion.

  • Discretion by default

Vehicles carry no branding. Your chauffeur speaks when spoken to, and what is discussed in the back of the car stays there.

  • Immaculate vehicles

Current-generation cars, valeted before every journey, with still water and charging in the rear compartment.

  • One point of contact

The same person handles your enquiry, your quotation and your booking, so nothing is explained twice.
