That motor car is more special, more isolated and a great deal more of an event, and for a wedding or a landmark day it deserves every consideration. Working weekends, shooting parties, a week of touring with luggage and muddy boots: those all point back to the Range Rover as the more relaxed choice. Nobody spends a hedge-lined lane worrying about the paintwork.

Three large cases and three cabin bags is an accurate figure, though shape counts for more here than in any saloon. Tall rather than long, the load space lets soft bags and cases stack upwards nicely, and the split tailgate hands you a shelf to rest things on while you load. One thing to weigh: the load lip sits high, which matters if you intend to handle your own equipment, although your chauffeur does the lifting as a rule. Four adults with four large cases is where we would recommend an MPV instead.

Access is the detail worth knowing about. Seat height here means stepping up rather than dropping down, which plenty of older passengers actively prefer, and the air suspension can be dropped at the kerb to shorten that step further. Ask, and your chauffeur sets it before you reach the car. Past two hours the elevated position stays comfortable, though over the roughest motorway concrete a flagship saloon still transmits marginally less than this does.
