Same badge on both, and they answer entirely different questions. A Range Rover is a luxury car that copes with rough ground. A Defender is a capable vehicle that happens to be comfortable. Where rear-seat refinement over long stretches of tarmac tops the list, spend the extra on the former. Where the load, the terrain or the weather decides matters, take this one, provided nobody in the party objects to a slightly firmer ride in return for arriving at the door.

Quote four large cases and three cabin bags and you have undersold the space, because this bay stands tall and squared off instead of being shaped around some boot line. Bulky, awkward things that would defeat a saloon simply go in upright. Plan for the rear door, though. It is side-hinged with the spare wheel bolted to it, which means it swings outwards and wants clear ground behind the vehicle. In a tight courtyard your chauffeur positions accordingly.

Climbing aboard is a proper step up, taller than the Range Rover asks of you, and worth mentioning if anybody in the party has restricted mobility. Side steps, where a vehicle carries them, make the climb easy. Without them it is a genuine reach. Run past two hours at motorway speed and the upright shape makes a little more wind noise than a saloon would, yet the seats stay comfortable for far longer than the body style leads you to expect.
