Drawn up as one single scheme, Belgravia still reads that way today: cream stucco terraces, generously wide streets, and a sequence of garden squares, Belgrave, Eaton, Chester and Wilton Crescent among them, that between them set the district's rhythm. Belgravia lies outside the congestion charge zone, whose boundary follows Grosvenor Place.

Travelling out of Belgravia is an unhurried business by nature. Antique dealers and interiors showrooms line the Pimlico Road; small shops fill Elizabeth Street; and a steady procession of dinners waits in Mayfair and St James's a few minutes north. Immediately east sits Victoria station with its rail and coach connections, which makes the district a natural base for going further. Weekends bring a good deal of country-house work too, an early departure on the Friday and a return at whatever hour Sunday permits.

Heathrow generally takes 45 to 75 minutes, most dependably by Hyde Park Corner and the A4. Gatwick comes to 55 to 90 minutes, and sitting just west of Vauxhall Bridge Road as it does, Belgravia makes the southbound run easier than most West End addresses manage. London City is normally 40 to 65 minutes. Bound for the Cotswolds, Oxford or Windsor, we take Park Lane to the A40 or head west on the M4, and we would sooner set off twenty minutes early than arrive tense.
