Off junction 5 of the M56 sit three passenger terminals on one large site, joined by a covered walkway. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 come with separate drop-offs and separate approaches, and the gap between them is a real walk with cases in your hands. So we confirm your terminal when the booking is made, which puts your chauffeur at the correct door instead of the nearest one.
Out of central Manchester the airport is close, usually well inside half an hour, and that closeness tempts people to leave it late. A long-haul departure wants a wider margin than the distance implies, above all at the start of the summer holidays when the drop-off roads back up. One very large site holds three passenger terminals, each keeping its own arrivals hall, and the walkway linking them is covered but long enough to regret with a trolley. Rather than assume the building, we confirm it, particularly while the airport works through a lengthy redevelopment that has shifted airlines between terminals more than once. Your chauffeur waits inside whichever hall is correct, and from there the walk to the car is short.
Clearance times swing wider here than the distances would suggest. Land from Europe mid-afternoon and you are often through in twenty-five minutes or so; come in on an overnight long-haul into the morning bank, several wide-bodies at immigration together, and it can take considerably longer. Our planning uses the published schedule you give us, with the allowance built for the type of flight instead of one figure applied to every booking.
A dedicated spur hangs the airport off junction 5 of the M56, with the A538 feeding in from the Cheshire side. From the city the drive is short; even so, the Mancunian Way and the M60 around Stockport both slow badly at peak, and the terminal forecourts, where stopping carries a charge, congest heavily the moment school holidays start. Before six in the morning, none of that applies at all.

Three windows squeeze hardest: that first weekend once the summer holidays start, February half term, then the fortnight either side of Christmas, by which point larger vehicles have been committed weeks in advance. Life is far easier in autumn and late winter, when a car can usually be turned up at short notice. Tell us your date, your terminal and a rough outline. We will say what genuinely remains.
Leaving on a long-haul flight, allow rather more than the drive time by itself suggests, since the queue that costs you time waits at the terminal and not on the motorway. Very early collections out of Cheshire and south Manchester are routine work, and confirming the evening before means nothing whatever has to be decided at dawn.
