At the top of the saloon market these two are the usual final pair, and clients often arrive convinced the choice is purely a matter of taste. It is not quite. They pursue the same goal by different routes: one by lengthening and equipping an already excellent flagship, the other by building a car from scratch around the idea that the rear compartment should feel like a room in a house.
The differences that emerge are real and consistent, and most of them are felt rather than seen. What follows examines how each behaves over a long journey, how they differ at the moment of arrival, what each does about doors, luggage and discretion, and which of the two is the more sensible booking for an ordinary week rather than an extraordinary day.
Two philosophies of the rear compartment
The Maybach takes a flagship saloon and stretches it behind the front doors, so the growth goes into the rear footwells rather than the boot. Depending on how a car was ordered, the outer seats may recline substantially, offer calf supports, heating and massage, and face folding tables. It is engineering directed with great precision at one specific person's comfort.
The Ghost is built around silence and stillness. Its structure is enormously rigid, its glass heavy, its suspension tuned to erase rather than report the surface, and its interior arranged so nothing intrudes. The effect is less about features than about subtraction: fewer noises, fewer movements, fewer things asking for your attention. Some passengers find it the most restful car made.
How each behaves over three hours
On a long motorway run both are outstanding, and the choice comes down to how you intend to spend the time. If you plan to work, the Maybach usually suits better: the seating position, the tables and the arrangement of surfaces are designed for a laptop and a document, and the seat can be set at a genuine working angle rather than a lounging one.
If you plan to rest or to think, the Ghost tends to win. Its particular quietness has a settling quality that passengers describe in almost identical terms, and the ride does more to remove the sense of travelling at all. Neither is meaningfully more comfortable than the other; they are comfortable in different ways, and knowing which you want makes the decision straightforward.
Doors, arrival and being noticed
The Ghost's rear-hinged coach doors change the moment of arrival considerably. The aperture is unobstructed, so stepping out is a single graceful movement rather than a negotiation, and long dresses, formal coats and kilts all work around it. Photographers know this, which is why the car appears so often at events where pictures are being taken. The doors do a meaningful amount of the work on a formal day.
The Maybach opens conventionally and, crucially, reads as a very good saloon to most onlookers rather than as an occasion. That understatement is a genuine feature. Outside an office, a hospital, a school or a private house, a car that does not announce itself is often exactly what is wanted, and there are clients for whom that is the deciding factor rather than a consolation.
Both are large cars and neither is invisible. The difference is in degree and in how quickly the average passer-by identifies what they are looking at, which is quicker for one than the other by a considerable margin. If you would prefer that nobody looks twice, that margin is the most important line on this page, and it is worth weighing before anything else about the two cars.
Point by point from the back seat
Stripped to the criteria that clients actually raise, the comparison sorts itself into a short and fairly consistent list. Notice that half of the lines are about the occasion rather than about the cars, which is the honest character of any comparison at this level. When the Maybach is the better booking
For business travel it is usually the right answer. If the object is to arrive prepared rather than admired, a car built around a working rear seat serves the day better than one built around ceremony, and the difference in outlay buys nothing you would use on a Tuesday morning between two meetings. Presence is only worth paying for when the occasion has a use for it.
It also suits any journey where attention would be unwelcome. A discreet collection after a long dinner, a hospital visit, a school pickup, an arrival at a client's office where you would rather the car said nothing at all: in each of these the more understated vehicle is the better-mannered choice, and choosing it is a sign of judgement rather than economy.
And it is easier to arrange. Supply of the very top British motor cars is genuinely limited, particularly at weekends in summer and at short notice outside London. If your date is fixed and your notice is short, the Maybach is far more likely to be available, and a superb car that exists on your date beats a slightly superior one that does not.
How to decide, and what is confirmed
A short test settles most enquiries. If the arrival is part of the event, take the Ghost. If the journey is the point and the arrival is incidental, take the Maybach. If four people are travelling with full luggage, take neither and book a larger vehicle, because both are three-passenger cars with saloon boots and no amount of enthusiasm changes that.
