Twelve miles or so south-west of Cardiff, the airport is reached along the A4226 off the M4 and the A48. No motorway comes to the door. That last stretch through the Vale runs on country roads, lovely by daylight and a good deal slower after dark, and we build the difference into every collection time instead of trusting an estimate on a screen.
Meeting is straightforward when there is only one terminal. A name board goes up in the arrivals hall, and from there the cases travel out to the car with your chauffeur. Send your flight number and the pickup is planned around the published schedule and the clearance times we would ordinarily allow. Holiday flights returning late at night are common at Rhoose. We treat them as normal, not as some exception.
A wider margin than the distance implies is what departures deserve, above all from Newport or the valleys, where the M4 crawls at peak times and the tunnels can stop everything dead. Your chauffeur arrives ahead of the agreed hour, loads the luggage and sets you down at the terminal entrance, a short and undramatic walk from the check-in desks.
For plenty of guests the onward journey is the reason they fly into Cardiff at all: the Brecon Beacons, the Gower, the Pembrokeshire coast, or a country house weekend up the Wye Valley. Nearer at hand, Cardiff Bay, Newport and Bridgend are short runs. Bristol makes a comfortable drive across the Severn when the flights suit that side better.

There is one terminal and one arrivals hall, and your chauffeur waits inside it holding a name board instead of ringing you from a car park. On a quiet evening, anyone travelling with hand luggage can be out remarkably fast. A full holiday flight working one belt takes a great deal longer. Collections are planned around the published arrival and the clearance we would ordinarily allow, and if the bags drag, we simply wait.
Set-down for departures sits close to the terminal entrance and the stop is meant to be short. It is the approach that repays plain speaking: the A4226 across the Vale, the A48 through Culverhouse Cross, and the M4 at junction 33 for anybody arriving from further off. Newport traffic through the Brynglas tunnels can wreck a schedule outright, so a journey beginning east of Cardiff carries a wider margin.
Whatever this airport lacks in route choice, it repays in what lies past the perimeter. Swansea and the Gower are an easy run west, Pembrokeshire a longer one in the same direction, and to the north the Beacons rise inside the hour. Bristol Airport makes a comfortable drive across the Severn, while London is a familiar day's work by road whenever the flights only make sense from there. Early departures go before the Vale roads have woken up, the single hour in which they move quickly.

International weekends, the summer holidays and the days around Christmas are when the cars disappear, and a Saturday with a full stadium is hardest of the lot. The quieter weeks really are quiet, and a booking placed a couple of days ahead will normally do, midweek above all.
Landing late? Tell us at the booking stage rather than trusting to luck; the terminal empties quickly, and a car already arranged is worth more at eleven at night than at any other hour of the day.
