Half an hour west, at Burford, the Cotswolds start properly, while Bicester Village pulls a steady stream of guests up the A34. To the south east lie Henley, Windsor and the Thames villages, and Stratford-upon-Avon is an hour up the road for anybody building a two-day itinerary around the car.

Heathrow is the practical airport, an hour to an hour and a half by the M40 and M25 as a rule, and arrivals are met inside the terminal by your chauffeur. Birmingham lies a similar distance north on certain routes. From central London the M40 usually asks an hour and a half to two hours, and holding a car for the day frequently beats two separate return transfers on value.
