Victorian commercial architecture runs the length of the centre, Charles Rennie Mackintosh signed his name across it, and out in the West End around Byres Road a genuinely good evening carries on long after other cities have given up. Shopping goes down Buchanan Street, the music venues rank among the busiest in Britain, and the welcome beats almost anywhere else we work. Curiosity gets repaid here, and everything is forgiven except pretension.
Five minutes apart and easily muddled, Central and Queen Street stations get confirmed with you before you travel. From either, the Merchant City hotels and the Blythswood terraces are a short run away. Night journeys matter most, and those we take care of too: the OVO Hydro and the SEC campus, Ibrox and Celtic Park on a matchday, and the slow crawl back out afterwards, when several thousand people all decide to leave at once.
Give a guest a free day and they will often ask for the road to Inveraray and Loch Fyne, with lunch beside the water. That is how near the west coast begins. Forty-five minutes or so takes you to Loch Lomond, with the Trossachs slightly past it, while Turnberry, Royal Troon and the rest of the Ayrshire golf coast come in under the hour. Stirling Castle stands away to the north east, and an hour on the M8 delivers Edinburgh.
Close to the city sits Glasgow Airport, often fifteen to twenty-five minutes on the M8, although roadworks can alter that with little notice. Prestwick covers the Ayrshire coast. Driving up from London occupies a full day, generally eight to nine hours on the M6 and M74 with sensible stops, so most guests come by air or rail and pick up the car from there.

How Glasgow works by car
Not many British cities let a motorway come this near the middle. Up on its elevated section the M8 cuts straight through and takes the Clyde at the Kingston Bridge, while the M77 peels south for Ayrshire, the M74 heads down towards Carlisle, and the M73 links across to the M80 for Stirling. Flowing, it is very quick indeed. Blocked, it does not move at all, which is why a chauffeur in Glasgow keeps the Clydeside Expressway and the river crossings held back for exactly that.
Laid out as a grid, the centre looks straightforward and then declines to be: Hope Street and West Nile Street run one way for a long stretch, and much of the shopping quarter is shut to traffic entirely. Buchanan Street is pedestrian, so any hotel off it gets approached from the side. A low emission zone covers the centre, and where a charge applies it is written into the quoted figure and confirmed with you beforehand, never slipped in later.
West of the city off the M8, Glasgow Airport is frequently fifteen to twenty-five minutes away, though motorway works turn up there with very little warning. Prestwick covers the Ayrshire coast. Edinburgh is roughly an hour east, worth the drive if the flight suits you better. Trickier by far are Hillington, Eurocentral and the industrial parks lining the M8, none of which sit anywhere near a station worth using. From London you are looking at a full day behind the wheel, so most guests fly or take the train and let the car start here.
