Luton sits north of London in Bedfordshire and combines a busy scheduled airport with one of the heaviest concentrations of business aviation in the country. Its private traffic runs from small jets on European hops to larger aircraft heading much further, and the passenger mix reflects that: corporate groups, touring parties, families and a good deal of short-notice charter. The private terminals operate separately from the main passenger building, with their own entrances.

Knowing which entrance is most of the job. A car sent to the main terminal is in the wrong place, and the difference is a frustrating loop of one-way roads. The approach is from the M1 at junction 10 and then the A1081 towards the airport, and the M1 is the variable. Outside the peaks an hour from central London is realistic; in the Friday evening or Monday morning flow, or when the M25 anticlockwise is troubled, considerably more. From north London and Hertfordshire it is a short run. We would rather leave twenty minutes early than explain a delay from the hard shoulder.

From Luton, onward journeys most often head into central London, out to Oxford and the Cotswolds, or north up the M1 towards the Midlands. Groups arriving together are better handled with a V-Class for people and luggage than a string of saloons, and larger parties travel in convoy on matched timings. Crew vehicles are booked alongside.
