On paper the train usually wins a long journey. In practice the comparison is rarely like for like: the train measures station to station, and almost nobody actually travels station to station. Add the journey to the terminus, the wait, the walk down the platform with luggage, and the taxi at the other end, and a four-hour drive that begins at your front door frequently arrives first.

It also arrives differently. You have had four uninterrupted hours in a quiet car with a table, power and nobody sitting beside you. You can take a confidential call. You can sleep. You can stop for twenty minutes somewhere pleasant because there is no connection to make.

We quote long-distance work as a single door-to-door movement, including the return leg and any waiting in between. Where a return the same day would make the schedule uncomfortable we will say so and suggest the version that actually works — occasionally that means an overnight, and occasionally it means not booking us at all.

The routes below are the ones we are asked for most often. Any other combination of two addresses in the United Kingdom is quoted the same way.

Intercity work gets priced as one door-to-door movement, not on distance alone. Even a one-way journey means the car has to come back, which is why a same-day return often represents better value than two separate one-way bookings, and always runs more simply. Waiting at the far end is agreed beforehand. Tolls and crossings sit inside the figure. Where an overnight makes better sense than pressing on, we suggest it instead of selling you the harder day.

Regulation of driving hours exists for good reason, and it shapes a long itinerary more than most people realise. On the very longest routes, or where a schedule pairs an early start with a late return, we may put a second chauffeur into the plan so nobody drives tired. That decision gets made in advance and explained in the quotation, never sprung on you during the day or halfway up a motorway.

Going by road is an argument about comfort, which makes the vehicle matter more here than anywhere else. Sit in it for several hours and the seat, the insulation and the rear space stop being luxuries; they turn into the difference between arriving ready and arriving flat.
