From Holyrood the Old Town climbs to the Castle through a tangle of closes and wynds, while below it the New Town sets out its Georgian terraces with complete composure. Guests arrive for the festivals in August, for whisky, for golf along the East Lothian coast, and more and more for a long weekend requiring nothing more strenuous than a good hotel and a quiet table booked somewhere warm. Walking pace suits the place best, once somebody has delivered you to the right end of it.

Down in a valley at the heart of the city sits Waverley, simple enough to arrive at and a genuine nuisance to walk out of carrying bags. Trains and flights we meet. After that come the corners of Edinburgh no application handles: cobbles on the way into Charlotte Square, the closest legitimate drop for the Castle Esplanade, hotels along George Street, and the entire place through August, when a road shut today may be open tomorrow with nothing announced.

Scotland opens quickly from here. Over the Forth, St Andrews is under two hours, Gleneagles and the Perthshire glens a shade less, and Loch Lomond lies west past Stirling. South through gentle countryside you reach the Borders and Melrose, Glasgow sits around an hour along the M8, and the road north towards the Highlands remains among the finest days out we arrange anywhere in Britain.

Away from the rush hour, twenty to thirty minutes covers the ground between the centre and Edinburgh Airport, with your chauffeur standing inside the terminal. As for driving up from London, it is a genuinely long haul: eight or nine hours on the A1 or the M6, depending where you break it, which is why most guests fly or catch the train and find a car waiting on arrival.
