Occasions, not errands, were what the Royal Crescent, the Circus and Great Pulteney Street were laid out for, the Roman Baths lie under the middle of everything, and steep green hills wrap the whole city round. Guests arrive for spa weekends, for weddings, for the Christmas market, and for the pleasure of walking somewhere beautiful these three hundred years without ever appearing to try at it.
Hard to park in, easy to be set down in, and there in one line is the whole argument for a chauffeur here. The Royal Crescent and the Circus we handle, hotels along Great Pulteney Street and up on Lansdown, the station at the bottom of the hill, and that climb out to Widcombe and Bathwick which nobody in evening dress enjoys on foot after dinner.
North east lie Castle Combe and Lacock, looking like film sets for the good reason that they often are. Stonehenge is about an hour south east across the plain, Longleat a similar run, and the southern Cotswolds start at Tetbury inside half an hour. Thirty to forty minutes west sits Bristol, making a two-city stay comfortable without moving hotels or repacking one case.
Nearest is Bristol Airport, forty to fifty minutes or thereabouts, while Heathrow is roughly two hours on the M4 and stays the usual choice for long-haul. Coming from London, the M4 to Junction 18 and down through Bathford generally takes two and a half to three and a half hours. Trains reach Bath Spa quickly, and we meet them at the front of the station rather than the side.

Bath is a bowl with steep sides
From London the usual approach comes off the M4 at Junction 18 and drops down the A46, which runs quickly enough until the final two miles at Batheaston, where the whole lot funnels into one road. From the south you climb in over the hills instead, on the A36 and A367. Two and a half to three and a half hours is realistic out of central London, with Friday afternoons and summer weekends sitting at the longer end of it.
Stall Street and Union Street carry no traffic at all in the centre, the Abbey Churchyard is pedestrian, and the loop around Pulteney Bridge will return you neatly to exactly where you started if you miss a turn. Setts and residents' permits govern the Royal Crescent and the Circus, so a car stops long enough for people and luggage and then goes. The forecourt at Bath Spa station is tight, and a meeting point on Manvers Street generally serves you far better.
What people underestimate is the last mile to a country hotel. Houses out towards Colerne, towards Hunstrete and through the Somerset villages sit at the end of long private drives, marked by a small sign and lit by nothing at all, and the lanes leading to them are single track with passing places. So we confirm the entrance instead of the postcode, since a postcode round here will happily land you in a field a mile short of the gates.

Bath is no commuter city, and its corporate work takes a different shape as a result: board days held at a country house, university and research visits up at Claverton, teams brought across from Bristol for something meant to feel like an occasion. Journeys here come fewer and longer, with the waiting built into the middle of them rather than tacked onto either end of the day.
With a conference or an offsite, the practical difficulties are parking and then the hills, in that order. We bring arrivals in groups, keep the cars nearby through the day, and run the evening leg out to a restaurant and back afterwards. Where the company is settling up, that can be arranged centrally so guests are never asked for anything on arrival.

Nothing needs timing to the minute, and that is why the spa weekend, Bath's signature, works as well as it does. From Friday evening a car is held for you: dinner in the centre, out to a village pub on Saturday, then back up the hill afterwards. In between it simply waits. Guests staying in the crescents leave luggage in the boot rather than hauling cases back and forth over cobbles.
A wedding here comes in two halves. First the ceremony in the city, at the Abbey or in one of the Georgian rooms; then the reception, somewhere down a lane with a marquee and a gravel yard. Bridal cars, guest shuttles and the late run home all get planned as a single movement. Christmas market weekends close central roads, and so does the half marathon in March, and both call for earlier departures than anyone expects.

Timing & Availability
The Bath calendar
Every weekend from late November belongs to the Christmas market, and the roads round the Abbey slow to a shuffle from mid-morning on. Early May puts the horse trials at Badminton within easy reach. September carries the Jane Austen festival and its parade. Rugby fixtures at the Recreation Ground tighten up the Pulteney Road side of the city on a Saturday afternoon.
Saturdays disappear first, usually months ahead, because the wedding season runs May to September. Midweek in January or February is the easiest time to put something together at short notice, and it happens to be when the city is at its most pleasant. If your date is fixed, we would far rather hear about it early than be asked to conjure a car on a Saturday in June.

Yes. Stopping is very limited around the Crescent and the Circus, with no practical parking at all, so we put you down at the door with the luggage and take the car on. Collection runs the same way, at whatever hour suits.
