Nobody asks whether the car will make it any more; they ask what the day feels like, whether the journey takes longer, and whether it is worth requesting one. Those are the right questions, and they have honest answers.

The quiet, and its side effects
The absence of engine noise is the first thing and the thing most passengers remember. There is no vibration at a standstill, no change of tone as the car pulls away, and no sound at all under gentle acceleration in traffic. A telephone call from the back of an electric saloon sounds noticeably cleaner to the person at the other end, which matters if you work while you travel.
The side effect is that other sounds become audible. Tyre roar on coarse motorway surfaces, wind around the mirrors and the faint whirr of the climate system all sit in a quieter background, so a car with poor glazing can end up feeling no calmer than a good petrol one. The better electric saloons address this with laminated glass and heavy insulation; lesser ones do not.
How it drives from the back
Electric power delivery is smooth and immediate, so a good chauffeur can move away from a junction without the small lurch that a gearbox change introduces. There are no gears to hunt for on a hill and no downshift before an overtake. For anyone who reads or works in the car, that consistency reduces the low-level jostling that makes screen work unpleasant on a poor road surface.
Regenerative braking is the one thing worth mentioning. When the car slows by recovering energy rather than by using the brakes, the deceleration can feel slightly different, and passengers prone to motion sickness occasionally notice it. Chauffeurs manage this by driving smoothly and, on cars that allow it, by selecting a gentler setting. Say if you are sensitive to it and it will be handled.

Waiting, warmth and standing time
One genuine advantage is invisible until you use it. A combustion car waiting outside a building with the heating on has to run its engine, which is noisy, produces fumes and is unwelcome outside a school, a hospital or a private house. An electric car keeps the cabin at temperature silently and without emissions, so the car you return to is warm and nobody has stood in a cloud of exhaust.
For a day of appointments with waiting time between them, this changes the experience more than any headline figure does. It also means the car can be brought to the door earlier without anybody minding, and that the interior is properly cooled on a hot afternoon before you get in rather than afterwards. Small things, but they are the ones that accumulate over a long day.
Range, charging and long days
Real-world range depends on the weather, the speed and the load, and the honest winter figure is lower than the one quoted anywhere. For a normal day of London journeys, or a return run to any of the London airports, this is irrelevant; the car starts full and finishes with plenty in hand. It only becomes a planning question once the distance grows substantially.
On a long run, charging is planned in advance around a stop you were probably making anyway. A rapid charger at a service area adds a useful amount in the time it takes to have a coffee, and a good chauffeur will have identified two options rather than one in case the first is occupied or faulty. The circumstances that genuinely need thinking about are short and specific.

City rules and the honest position
Electric vehicles are treated differently by low-emission and congestion schemes in several British cities, and the details change from year to year as those schemes are revised. We will not set out the current rules here, because a page that quotes them will be wrong within a season. If a zone affects your journey, ask when you book and you will get the position as it stands on your date.
What is stable is the general direction. Restrictions on older vehicles have tightened steadily, which is one reason electric and hybrid cars have become common in chauffeur work, alongside the simple fact that passengers like them. That is a reasonable thing to know without a table of charges attached to it, and it means an electric car is rarely the obstacle in a city centre.
When to ask for a combustion car
There are days when we would steer you away from an electric vehicle, and they are not rare enough to leave unmentioned. A four-hundred-mile day with a fixed arrival time and no room for a stop is the clearest of them. So is a rural itinerary in midwinter with several remote pickups, where the sensible answer is the car that refuels in four minutes in any village.
There is a luggage note as well. Battery packaging can alter boot shape in some models, and plug-in hybrids in particular give up useful space to the battery pack. If your load sits close to the limit, mention it and the assignment will take account of it.
