Few cities anywhere have quite such a good sense of humour about themselves as this one does.

A short run separates the centre from Temple Meads, and a genuinely awkward walk if you are carrying cases. Up in Clifton the problem gets worse: steep gradients, narrow streets, almost nowhere a car may legally stop, so having a chauffeur who knows the one corner that works tells on arrival. Around Tetbury and Castle Combe the southern Cotswolds offer an excellent lunch and an even better drive home in the late afternoon.

Down at Lulsgate, south of the city, Bristol Airport is generally thirty to forty minutes away, with the A38 slowing at peak. Two and a half to three and a half hours is the usual figure from London, where the M4 does nearly all the work and the Reading and Swindon stretches settle which end of that range you land on. Trains come into Temple Meads, and we meet them at the front of the station.
