Along the M4 the technology corridor keeps the town busy right through the week, the Oracle and the Abbey Quarter take care of everything else, and the river at Caversham reminds you how close the prettier parts of Berkshire actually are. One of the busiest interchanges outside London is Reading station, and the one-way system around it treats visitors with genuine hostility. Guests get met at an agreed point, and from there we go on: Green Park and Thames Valley Park, hotels around Forbury and Caversham, the corporate campuses at Winnersh and Theale, and those early Heathrow runs that must leave before the M4 starts filling.

Twenty minutes upriver sits Henley-on-Thames, a place transformed entirely during the Regatta. East lie Windsor and Ascot, west Newbury and its racecourse, north the Chiltern villages through Sonning Common and Nettlebed. Oxford is roughly forty-five minutes on the A329M and A34, near enough that guests staying a week often spend a day there and return for dinner.

Heathrow is the natural airport, thirty to forty-five minutes on the M4 outside the peaks, while Gatwick comes nearer an hour and a half by the M25. Out of central London the M4 generally takes an hour to an hour and a half. Both the Elizabeth line and Great Western services reach Reading, should you prefer the car waiting at the far end.
