Colleges line the Backs with the river running behind them, a market still trades on the market square, and the technology cluster around the Science Park and Addenbrooke's has made this city considerably wealthier than it appears from the pavement. Guests come for graduations, for interviews, for May Balls, and for the kind of unhurried visit ending with punting and an early dinner beside the water.
Between bus gates and pedestrianised streets, the centre is hard to drive and impossible to guess at. Right approaches are what we use: porters' lodges instead of the far end of the street, the permitted stopping points beside the central colleges, and hotels on Trumpington Street and out at Madingley. Addenbrooke's, the Biomedical Campus and the Science Park all lie beyond the middle, and each is far simpler with a car.
Twenty minutes north, over the fens, stand Ely and its cathedral. Newmarket, home of British racing, lies east on the A14, while the Imperial War Museum at Duxford sits south beside the M11. An easy afternoon takes in Saffron Walden and Audley End, and guests staying longer frequently ask for the run out to the north Norfolk coast and back inside a single day.
Closest of the airports is Stansted, thirty-five to fifty minutes down the M11, with Heathrow around an hour and a half to two hours according to the M25. Luton lies a similar distance west. Out of central London the M11 usually asks an hour and a half to two hours, while the train from King's Cross runs it in under an hour, with a car meeting it.

Reaching the colleges and campuses
Leave at Junction 11 and you come into Trumpington and the southern side; leave at Junction 12 and you arrive along the Barton Road. That choice governs your final fifteen minutes, though everything before it belongs to the M11 if you are travelling up from London. From the west and the north, the A14 is the road in. Reckon on ninety minutes to two hours for a weekday, and remember that the A14 around Milton is quite capable of undoing any estimate by itself.
Driving the historic centre is not hard so much as costly if you guess. Bus gates turn up exactly where a visitor would not think to look for them, a number of streets take no traffic for most of the day, and the college fronts on Trinity Street and King's Parade are no place for a car to linger. What works is a set-down from Queen's Road, or from one of the permitted points off Trumpington Street, or at a porters' lodge on some quieter side street.
Past the colleges the geography opens right out, and that is where a car pays for itself. South off the Hills Road corridor you find Addenbrooke's and the Biomedical Campus; north beside the A14 sits the Science Park; and Granta Park, Babraham and the genome campus at Hinxton are strung away towards Saffron Walden. Not one of them is walkable from a station. All of them are gated. Your chauffeur waits in the visitor area, or just outside it, while you are inside.

Meetings across the cluster
One building almost never contains the whole of a Cambridge working day. A morning presentation up on the Science Park, lunch in town, then two afternoon meetings over on the Hills Road side is a perfectly normal shape, and it is the gaps between them where a car stops being a luxury. Papers stay on the back seat. Coats stay in the boot. Nobody stands on a verge hoping a taxi eventually appears.
Teams flying in tend to land at Stansted or at Heathrow and head straight into a meeting, so departures get timed against the M11 and the M25 rather than against some application's best case. Two questions matter: where a car may legitimately stop near Senate House, and how long it can hold there. Both get answered before the morning rather than during it, and the car stays close while the photographs take a great deal longer than anybody planned.
Step away from the university and the year keeps a different rhythm. Newmarket races lie twenty minutes east and end with the entire crowd leaving at the same moment. Weddings happen in college halls, in barns out towards Saffron Walden, and in the villages along the river, where evening transport for guests is simply not a thing that exists. Christmas brings carol services, and the kind of night nobody wants to finish on a fen road in fog.

Timing & Availability
When Cambridge fills up
The busiest fortnight of the calendar falls in late June, when graduation and the ball season overlap and the entire city is booked out. Early October fills again as term starts, and December carries the interview period. Around all that, midweek availability tends to be good and short notice is often workable, although the larger vehicles go first whenever several families are travelling together.
Journey times shift for race meetings at Newmarket, for the summer festivals out at Cherry Hinton, and for any weekend when the weather is good on the river. Where the arrival is fixed, a ceremony, a service, a train back to King's Cross, we would sooner leave early and wait than promise you a time the road cannot actually deliver. An honest answer about a difficult date beats a hopeful one every time.
