Fast though the trains from Paddington are, they set you down at the bottom of a very steep city with all your luggage, and Bath is no place to be hauling cases uphill in good clothes. A car delivers you to the hotel door instead, whether that door stands on the Royal Crescent, halfway up Lansdown, or tucked away down a lane in Bathwick. Your weekend begins the moment the car door shuts in London.
West goes the M4, past Heathrow, Reading and Swindon, and only around Reading does it cause any real bother. We come off at Junction 18 and drop down through Bathford and Batheaston, the prettiest approach of the lot, which brings you into the city alongside the river. When the weather turns heavy, the alternative through Chippenham on the A4 is occasionally quicker.
Three hours in each direction is long enough that comfort stops being an abstraction and starts being something you feel in the seat. Guests bound for a spa weekend usually want the unwinding to start well before they get there; guests bound for a wedding want to arrive uncreased. Neither is difficult in a car somebody else is driving, with the boot doing the carrying.
Bath weekends tend to work best as a Friday out and a Sunday back, with the same chauffeur on both legs wherever the schedule allows it. Some guests hold onto the car through Saturday to take in Castle Combe, Lacock or Stonehenge. Stops on the way down are simple to include, and Marlborough is a good one, so long as you say so in advance.

Heading west, the M4 has three moods to it. Busy but predictable as far as Slough; genuinely slow through the Reading junctions at practically any hour that resembles a peak; then long, open and quick from the Newbury turn-off all the way to Swindon. Our usual exit is Junction 18, dropping down through Bathford and Batheaston beside the river, although when that descent is backed up the A4 through Chippenham sometimes turns out quicker.
Three hours warrants one stop, and Marlborough or Hungerford just off the A4 beat the service areas on either side of them by a distance. Give us the hotel name and street, say if there is a wedding arrival window to hit, and count the cases, because Bath's lanes and residents' bays reward a vehicle picked on purpose. Every estimate loosens on a Friday, so we quote ranges and we mean them.
On paper, Paddington to Bath Spa is fast, and we would never pretend otherwise. It is the last quarter mile that settles the matter. Bath Spa sits at the foot of a steep city; most hotels do not, and the rank there on a Friday evening is a queue rather than a formality. Factor in crossing London to Paddington carrying a weekend's luggage, and the car quietly wins back the time it looked like losing.

Closing the boot in London is where the weekend actually starts. Timing & Availability
Fridays, Sundays and season
Westbound on a Friday is the slowest departure in the week, and Reading is the reason. Setting off before eleven or after seven changes things noticeably, and where a dinner reservation is at stake we would much rather leave early than turn up apologising. Sunday returns run kindly enough until late afternoon, when everybody who came down on Friday decides to go home together.
Busiest in the Bath year are summer Saturdays, the Christmas market weeks and the days either side of a bank holiday, and the larger vehicles go first every time. For a wedding, six to eight weeks is comfortable notice; a midweek spa trip can often be arranged at very short notice indeed.
