Weekdays keep the financial and legal district around Park Square busy, shopping belongs to the Victoria Quarter and the Victorian arcades, and the restaurant scene has grown into one of the strongest in the north without making a fuss about it. Guests arrive for meetings, for racing at York and Wetherby, and for weekends leaning firmly towards the Dales. This is a city that takes itself seriously where it should and not at all elsewhere.
Straight out of Leeds station you land on City Square, convenient at eleven in the morning and chaos by half past five. We meet guests clear of the scrum and carry on from there: hotels around Boar Lane and the Headrow, the offices at Wellington Place, the arena north of the centre, and those business parks at Thorpe Park and Leeds Valley that are a genuine nuisance without a car of your own.
Half an hour north lies Harrogate, which deserves a day of its own, with the Valley Gardens, the tea rooms and the spa. York is under the hour eastwards, Ilkley and Bolton Abbey mark the edge of the Dales, and Harewood House is fifteen minutes off the ring road. Go a little further and the Dales proper start around Skipton, which is where most of our day hires end up.
Thirty to forty minutes from the centre sits Leeds Bradford Airport, though its approach lanes slow badly in poor weather. Manchester Airport is roughly ninety minutes away and frequently the better call for long-haul. Out of London the M1 carries you nearly the whole way, four to five hours as a rule; many guests take the train from King's Cross and keep a car for the two days they are here.

Leeds by road and rail
Few cities are as well connected. In from the south comes the M1, handed straight to the city by the M621, while the M62 runs across east to west and the inner ring road slips traffic under the centre through a run of tunnels which are quick, and easy to miss altogether. Head north and the A61 and A660 climb away towards Headingley and Otley, where both crawl once term begins.
Two entrances serve the station, one at either end, and knowing which suits your platform will save you more time than any clever choice of route. New Station Street is busy at more or less any hour, so we hold a short way off and pull forward once you are out on the pavement. Parking in the centre is thin on the ground and awkward for a car that has to wait, which is why the vehicle sits at a point agreed beforehand. Clean air plans in West Yorkshire have been revisited more than once, and should a charge apply to your vehicle it is written into the quotation and confirmed with you in advance.
Up above the city at Yeadon, Leeds Bradford is usually thirty to forty-five minutes off, and the approach lanes are narrow enough to slow right down in poor weather; for long-haul, most people choose Manchester at roughly ninety minutes. Out-of-town addresses give more trouble than any of that. Thorpe Park sits east by the M1, and there is Leeds Valley Park too, along with the sites gathered around White Rose. From London the M1 usually runs four to five hours.

Leeds through the year
Three stretches run busiest: the summer racing weeks, Christmas from late November onwards, and the graduation weekends when two large universities fill every hotel in the city at the same time. Hold those dates early if you can. An ordinary weekday causes no real trouble, though anything crossing the centre between four and half past six deserves a good deal more time than a map will ever suggest.
Margin goes into airport departures through the winter for good reason: the lanes up to Yeadon and the roads over the tops towards the Dales can turn on you fast. Midweek, a short-notice request is often possible. We would far rather say plainly that a schedule looks optimistic than agree to it and spend the day apologising for it.
