In the middle of the city stands the castle with a park running away behind it, the Victorian arcades hold the shops worth finding, and the Bay has turned into a proper evening destination of its own. Let Wales play at the Principality Stadium and the whole centre changes character within the hour, the singing carrying a good deal further than the road closures do.

On a match day the closures reach right across the city, and most of the job here amounts to knowing which streets go. We work around them, and around the everyday Cardiff runs too: Central and Queen Street stations, the Westgate Street hotels and those out at the Bay, the Millennium Centre, plus Cardiff Gate and Cardiff Edge, business parks that sit awkwardly off the A48 with no useful bus anywhere near them.

Under an hour north the Brecon Beacons start, and they are the reason to keep the car a second day. West lie the Gower peninsula and Swansea, east towards the border the Wye Valley and Tintern Abbey, while Penarth and Barry sit on the coast twenty minutes off. Bristol and Bath are both a straightforward run back over the Severn crossing.

West at Rhoose, Cardiff Airport is twenty-five to thirty-five minutes away. Bristol Airport frequently offers the better connections, fifty to seventy minutes or so over the bridge. From London the M4 does the whole journey, three to four hours as a rule, according to Newport and the Severn approach, while trains out of Paddington take around two hours. Plenty of guests come by train and keep a car waiting at Central instead.
