Ships leave the cruise terminals along the water for the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and a good deal further afield, every September the Boat Show fills the town, and a few minutes down the road the New Forest begins. Put in a maritime history that shaped the city, plus the ferries crossing to Cowes, and what you have is somewhere most visitors pass through on their way to something anticipated for months on end.
Cruise transfers make up the bulk of our work here, and they reduce to luggage and timing. Collections happen from home with boot space enough for a fortnight of cases, delivery goes to the right terminal, since Ocean, Mayflower, Horizon and QEII are nowhere near one another, and the ship gets met again on the return morning. Hotels, the station and hospital runs account for most of the rest.
At Ashurst the New Forest starts, rewarding a slow drive through Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst and Beaulieu. Twenty minutes north stand Winchester and its cathedral, with Salisbury and the plain slightly beyond. Lymington and the Solent villages look lovely on a clear day, while Bournemouth and the Jurassic Coast run west for anyone able to give them a whole day.
Unusually convenient, Southampton Airport lies around fifteen to twenty-five minutes from the docks. Heathrow generally takes an hour and a half to two hours on the M3 and M25, Gatwick a similar distance eastward. Out of central London the M3 usually wants two to two and a half hours, though sailing days and half term add to it, so margin gets built in rather than merely hoped for.

Docks, terminals and the last mile
Away from the peaks, allow two to two and a half hours; sailing Saturdays, half term and any event in the New Forest will all push past that. The road itself is straightforward, the M3 running the entire way from town until it meets the M27 at Junction 14, after which the A33 delivers you into the city. Between the airport, the docks and the western side, nothing beats the M27 running across the top.
Split between the Eastern and the Western Docks, the cruise terminals stand further apart than any map lets on. Each one is reached through its own dock gate, and at the barrier it is the gate that matters. Once you are inside, a car may stop for as long as it takes to unload with a porter and then has to move along, so there is no lingering about for photographs. We confirm the gate against your ship and your date instead of assuming last time's arrangement still holds.
Patience is what disembarkation asks of you, since it runs the other way about. Your group gets called in its own time, the terminal is heaving, and so the chauffeur sits outside the dock estate instead of idling at a kerb, then comes forward the moment you emerge with the cases. Elsewhere, the quick way over to the Woolston side is the Itchen Bridge, and Eastleigh has the airport fifteen to twenty-five minutes north of here, with a station beside it.

The ship is the occasion for most guests, and the day is really about turning up unhurried and well ahead of a check-in window that will not move for anybody. Anniversary sailings, family celebrations, the long winter voyages: each takes the same shape. What makes it a pleasure is being delivered to the terminal instead of negotiating a multi-storey with four cases in tow.
Everything else comes from the Solent. Cowes Week in August pulls people towards the Red Funnel crossings at Town Quay, the island festivals fill the ferries through June, and Goodwood lies roughly an hour east for the summer meetings and the Revival. Weddings happen out in the New Forest villages, where the lanes are unlit, unfenced and shared with ponies once it goes dark.

Timing & Availability
Around the sailing calendar
Broadly the season runs from spring through to late autumn, and the heaviest turnaround days fall at weekends, when several ships are alongside at the same time. On those mornings the dock approaches queue, and the check-in windows are staggered for very good reason. Christmas and New Year sailings get booked earliest of the lot, with the larger vehicles for them gone months ahead.
Come September the Boat Show arrives, and for its duration the waterfront roads work differently. School holidays pack the M3 in both directions, so leaving London on a Friday afternoon is best avoided when the ship sails the following morning. Tell us the ship, the sailing date and how many cases you have. From your check-in window, the timings are then worked backwards, hour by hour.
