Handsome and genuinely central, which is rarer than it sounds, Central Station is where most stays begin. From it we run the short journeys that make a visit easy: hotels on the Quayside and Grey Street, the university and the Royal Victoria Infirmary, business parks at Cobalt and Quorum, and matchday routes around St James' when the city centre folds in on itself and the walk back to a rank turns out longer than it looked.

Almost at once Northumberland begins, and for many guests that is the entire point of coming. Alnwick Castle with its garden lies under the hour, Bamburgh and the empty beaches a little further on, while Hadrian's Wall runs west along the A69 towards Hexham. Twenty minutes south sit Durham and its cathedral, and the Cheviots give a long quiet day to anyone wanting the road entirely to themselves.

Unusually close to the city, Newcastle International is often fifteen to twenty-five minutes on the A696. Driving down from London counts as a serious undertaking, five and a half to six and a half hours by the A1 as a rule, and far better broken with a proper stop somewhere in Yorkshire. Most people take the East Coast train, and we meet it at Central Station with the car already warm.
