Warwick lies roughly two hours north of London, and an early departure pays twice over: the drive is better, and the castle has not yet filled. Intactness is what distinguishes it from most English castles. Gatehouse, walls, towers, Great Hall, state rooms, every part of it still stands above a bend in the Avon. Ramparts run tower to tower and you can walk them, and looking down onto the water gives you the photograph that everybody ends up taking.
It also turns out to be a genuinely good day with children, which few medieval sites can claim. Through the season there are daily displays in the grounds, the towers can be climbed, and the sheer size of the place keeps attention. Grown-ups usually take more from the state rooms and the chapel. Either way four hours vanishes, and the castle is built to swallow it.
Below sits the town, often skipped, and it should not be. Beside the West Gate stands Lord Leycester Hospital, a timbered fourteenth-century range and one of the finest surviving medieval buildings anywhere in the country. Down at the end of Mill Street, the Mill Garden hands you that classic view back across the water to the castle. Both lie five minutes on foot from your set-down point.
Keep a car for the day and the neighbours come within reach. Fifteen minutes north stands Kenilworth Castle, a ruin of enormous romance with Elizabethan gardens recreated in its grounds. Twenty minutes south lies Stratford-upon-Avon. A Realistic Warwickshire Day
Four hours inside the castle is normal, and with children five is common. Give the town below another hour and the day is already spent, which makes Kenilworth or Stratford a choice rather than an addition. Out of London the round trip is four hours of driving, so an eight o'clock departure gets you there for opening, with a comfortable return by early evening in summer.
You arrange the admission, and securing it in advance for a dated arrival is generally wisest, since the castle manages its numbers and the seasonal displays run to a published timetable. Tell us which display you mean to catch and the morning gets built to reach it. Estate car parks sit a walk away from the gate, so your chauffeur sets you down as close as vehicles are permitted and then holds nearby.
Ramparts are the point of Warwick, and they are also what it costs you physically: narrow spiral stairs, uneven treads, no lift to the top of any tower. The grounds themselves stay flat and easy. School holidays are when the castle is liveliest, with the seasonal programme running at full stretch, and a term-time midweek is when it is most peaceful. Easter and late August are the busiest weeks in the year. Spring and early autumn hand you the ramparts at comfortable temperatures. Winter shortens the daylight, so take the town and the Mill Garden before the light goes.
Larger vehicles vanish first over half terms and the summer holidays, so a family should allow three or four weeks. A midweek date outside the holidays can often be arranged on a few days' notice. Buy the dated admission before you confirm the car, then send us the arrival time along with any display you want to catch, and we set the departure from there.
