Two hours from London, Stratford is small enough to walk across in an afternoon, which is precisely why the properties scattered around it argue so strongly for a car. Henley Street holds the Birthplace, and the town centre is all on foot. Anne Hathaway's Cottage out at Shottery lies a mile away, Mary Arden's Farm at Wilmcote three miles, and reaching either without your own transport swallows the day whole.
Handsome, the town, genuinely so. Timber-framed frontages, a broad river carrying swans and rowing boats, and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre sitting low down on the bank. Ten minutes downstream along a lime avenue stands Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare was both baptised and buried, his grave set into the chancel floor beneath its own inscription. It is a quieter stop than the birthplace, a more affecting one, and far less crowded.
Build the day around an evening performance where you can. Both the RSC's main house and the Swan stand a few steps back from the water, and being picked up afterwards by your own car changes everything: no trudge to a car park in the dark, no waiting about for a train, and a long day becomes an easy one. Through the interval your chauffeur will hold coats and bags, and the car is at the door the moment you come out.

Spacing the Properties Across a Day
There are five Shakespeare properties, and hardly anybody ought to attempt all five. Three makes a good day: the Birthplace, Holy Trinity, and one of the outlying houses. Each wants forty-five minutes to an hour, with the driving between them measured in single figures. Put lunch on top, plus an hour walking the riverside, and the daylight is gone. With a performance on the end, keep the afternoon deliberately light.
You arrange the property admission, and the houses in town work on timed entry that fills fastest through the middle of the day. Send the slots over and the route gets ordered around them instead of guessed at. Theatre performances are the immovable point: a matinee finishes mid-afternoon, an evening show runs late. Central car parks in Stratford are small and frequently full, so set-down and collection happen at agreed points instead.
Walking in the town is flat and short, Henley Street to Holy Trinity coming to under a mile along the river, though the historic houses bring narrow stairs, low beams and uneven floors, and the farm at Wilmcote is a working yard whatever the weather does.
