On paper the Cambridge run is simple; in practice it irritates. Dull describes the M11, and the parking in Cambridge is worse than dull, while bus gates seal off the centre to most traffic and catch visitors out with tiresome regularity. One chauffeur disposes of all three at a stroke, delivering you to the porters' lodge instead of a multi-storey half a mile off with an hour ticking away on the clock.
Off the North Circular, the M11 heads almost due north past Harlow, Bishop's Stortford and Stansted, with good surface the whole distance. Junction 11 takes you in past Trumpington and the Biomedical Campus; Junction 13 serves the northern colleges and the Science Park rather better. Anything carrying on east towards Newmarket goes onto the A14. As routes go, this one rarely springs a surprise.
Ninety minutes will clear an inbox, or it will pass in complete silence, and both count as perfectly legitimate uses of the time. May Ball guests spend it revising their plans. Parents spend it trying to recall where on earth they parked in 1994. Coming back, after a long ceremony and a considerably longer dinner, the worth of a quiet car with nobody to entertain becomes plain.
A Cambridge day tends to hang on several fixed points, a ceremony, a lunch, drinks at the college, with unpredictable gaps in between. The M11 and the bus gates
Fast services out of King's Cross are quick enough that we will happily concede the argument for one traveller with a laptop bag heading somewhere near the station. The tail end is what no timetable covers: a rank at peak times, restricted streets no cab may legally cross, and a walk over cobbles in the wrong shoes. Put two or more of you together, or let anything finish after midnight, and the arithmetic swings firmly the other way and stays there.
Two journeys sit hidden inside this one. First comes getting out of London to reach the M11, either by the North Circular to Woodford or up the A10 and across, and nearly all of the day's uncertainty lives in that opening section. Second comes the motorway itself: well surfaced, lightly used by British standards, and rarely eventful. Junction 11 serves the south of the city; Junctions 13 and 14 suit the north and the Science Park.
You rarely need a break, although Birchanger Green near Stansted makes a sensible pause on a late run home, and boot space counts for more than distance once gowns and open day paperwork come into it. Knowing the college, the exact meeting point and the carriages time for a ball helps enormously, because signal inside a college court can be poor and a corner agreed beforehand beats a missed call every time.

For all that its centre looks compact, Cambridge is spread out. A working day here usually touches the Science Park up north, one of the southern campuses, and lunch somewhere between the two, which is three destinations badly joined by any public means. Few weeks in the year produce less convenient departure times than the Cambridge social calendar does. Dawn is when May Week finishes. Ceremonies at Senate House get squeezed into tight slots while families converge from three separate directions, and by nine the open days have taken every car park. Term dates and late nights
Three things put pressure on the diary: graduation Saturdays, May Week, the autumn open days. Book late for any of those and the better vehicles have already gone. Take an ordinary weekday instead, set off from London after nine or before three, and the North Circular never shows you its worst side. Going back the other way, leave Cambridge between four and six and you will crawl, whatever the map cheerfully claims.
Collections at a very late hour are routine on this route, not exceptional, and a four o'clock finish causes no trouble so long as we have a rough idea when to expect it. Same-day returns work well. Overnight stays are just as simple, with the car coming back the following morning instead. Midweek short notice is often available, and asking what is free never costs a penny.
