Dominating the skyline is the Castle, Eton sits across the bridge, and the Great Park runs south towards Ascot in a way that leaves the whole area feeling far more rural than any map lets on. Guests arrive for the racing, for polo in the Park, for school occasions involving a great deal of standing about in good shoes, and for the view along the Long Walk on a clear afternoon.
With Heathrow only minutes off, few places in England let you arrive as well as Windsor does. Flights we meet, driving straight in, and then comes the local awkwardness: the set-down nearest the Castle entrance, hotels around the High Street and Sheet Street, the Eton College approach on a busy speech day, and Ascot race week, when every road within three miles drops to walking pace.
Fifteen minutes south lies Ascot, while the polo grounds sit within the Great Park itself. North are Cliveden and the Thames at Maidenhead, Henley is half an hour west, and Wentworth with the Surrey courses is near enough for a morning round and lunch after. Families head for Legoland, five minutes off and much better approached before queues build at the main gate.
Twenty to thirty minutes covers Heathrow as a rule, according to the terminal and how the M4 is behaving. Gatwick runs to about an hour and a quarter. Out of central London the M4 usually takes an hour to an hour and a half, longer at either end of the working day, and the train from Paddington via Slough makes a sensible alternative with a car waiting at Windsor.

Getting around Windsor and the Park
Out of town the standard run takes the M4 to Junction 6 and then the dual carriageway in, generally an hour to an hour and a half, longer at either end of the working day. Coming from the south west, the M3 and the A332 through the Great Park make the prettier alternative. Heathrow sits close enough that it is the terminal, rather than the distance, which decides your journey time.
Thames Street in town is narrow, steep and permanently busy, while the Castle entrance on Castle Hill permits a brief stop and nothing beyond that. On Changing the Guard mornings a marching party goes through the middle of town and shuts streets for a while, which rearranges the entire hour. Peascod Street is pedestrian. So we use the set-downs on the High Street and River Street, send the car towards Alexandra Gardens, and bring it back when you call.
Visitors misjudge the Great Park more than anything else here. It is far bigger than it appears, the Long Walk carries no traffic whatsoever, and the gates at Bishopsgate, at Ranger's and over on the Savill side each serve a different corner of it. Racecourse days at Windsor bring their own trouble, the course sitting on an island in the Thames with one way on and one way off. Ascot is about fifteen minutes south on an ordinary day, and a good deal more than that in June.

Sitting at the quiet end of the Heathrow corridor makes Windsor a favourite base for teams flying in for two or three days. Hotel meeting rooms, then a country house lunch, then an evening back in town is a common enough pattern, and it runs far better on one car held throughout than on three separate bookings made on the fly as the day goes along.
No town in this bracket has a shorter airport run, which makes leaving it late very tempting indeed. We would sooner set off sensibly and have you sitting down early instead. Racing, polo and school days
Royal Ascot in June is the fixture this whole area arranges itself around. Enclosure timings, the dress, and the long walk out of any car park all point the same way: be set down close in, and be collected somewhere sensible rather than joining the queue to get out. Windsor's own Monday evening meetings across the summer are a gentler version of it, and they end in the dark.
Racing aside, the Horse Show in May, polo right through the season and the Fourth of June each carry their own closures and their own crowds. Weddings take place at the riverside houses along the Maidenhead road and out towards Bray, where guests need some way of getting home afterwards. And for families, arriving at Legoland early, before the gate queues form, is worth more than any shortcut.

Timing & Availability
Booking around the season
Nothing else in the year comes close to mid-June for sheer pressure. Royal Ascot takes cars out of circulation across the whole Thames Valley months in advance, and the Horse Show in May does the same on a smaller scale, as do the school occasions of early summer. Where your date is fixed and already known, the sooner it reaches us the better for everyone.
Away from those weeks Windsor is comfortable enough, and a midweek airport run or an evening in town can often be arranged at short notice. December fills up with parties, and the Castle stands lit for Christmas. Ask early about a June date and late about a February one, and either way what comes back is an honest account of the roads.

Twenty to thirty minutes in the ordinary way, according to the terminal and how the M4 and M25 are running. Arrivals are met inside the terminal by your chauffeur, so no one hunts for a pickup area carrying luggage.
Often. Speech days and open days pack the surrounding streets, with parking heavily restricted, so we set you down close to whichever entrance matters and collect afterwards from a point agreed beforehand between us.
Comfortably, about half an hour on any ordinary day. Regatta time alters the approaches and stretches journeys considerably, so we plan around the closures and settle timings with you the day before.
