Caves run beneath the castle, the Lace Market still looks exactly its part, and Sherwood waits somewhere out past the ring road. Two large universities keep the city young, Trent Bridge and the City Ground hand it a serious sporting habit, and an evening here runs from proper restaurants through to bars that close a good deal later than most. Easy to underestimate, this place, and difficult to leave early.

Beyond the tram lines, on the southern side, you will find the station, while Maid Marian Way and its one-way system see off most first-time visitors. Familiar ground for us. The journeys we make most often go to hotels by the Lace Market and Castle Gate, to the arena, to the Queen's Medical Centre, and out to those business parks along the A52 in the direction of Derby, which look close on a map and never are.

East into Leicestershire stands Belvoir Castle, north stands Southwell Minster, and each makes an easy half day. Derby is twenty-five minutes west, Leicester about the same to the south, and the southern Peak District starts around Matlock inside the hour. For guests who would sooner see stone villages than another city, Rutland Water, Burghley and Stamford give a genuinely pretty day, with a long lunch somewhere in front of a fire.

Twenty-five to thirty-five minutes on the A453 brings East Midlands Airport, the practical choice for most guests, with Birmingham an hour or so off when the connections need to be wider. Out of London the M1 keeps things straightforward, two and a half to three and a half hours as a rule, while trains from St Pancras take a little under two, which many guests prefer with a car standing by.
