From nearly anywhere you can see the Minster, the Shambles is genuinely medieval rather than simply old, and across the summer the racecourse on the Knavesmire stages some of the finest flat racing in the country. To the west is Harrogate with its spa and tea rooms, the North York Moors run out towards Whitby and the coast, and past Ripon the Dales begin. Leeds is under the hour, while Fountains Abbey gives an unhurried afternoon to anybody wanting something quieter than a second cathedral.

Fifty to seventy minutes off lies Leeds Bradford Airport, with Manchester at around an hour and a half to two hours for long-haul. From London the A1 or M1 generally asks four to five hours, the Peterborough and Doncaster stretches settling most of the difference. Trains from King's Cross reach York in about two hours, and we meet them at the station entrance.
