The A66 east to Scotch Corner is the great connector here and the road most likely to catch you out. It crosses Stainmore at height, is exposed to wind and drifting snow, and mixes dual and single carriageway with slow-moving lorry traffic. Winter closures are not unusual. Southbound on the M6 the climb over Shap is similarly exposed, with restrictions for high-sided vehicles in a gale. We check conditions before any long run rather than at the first queue.

Ullswater fills in summer. The A592 along the western shore is narrow, walled and busy from mid-morning, and Kirkstone Pass at its southern end is steep and closed by snow several times most winters. Pooley Bridge and Glenridding have very limited parking, and the steamer piers draw traffic in waves. For a hotel on that shore we allow far longer than the mileage suggests, and prefer an early departure for anything with a flight attached.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
