The M66 is short and generally quick, but it delivers you to Simister Island, where the M60, M62 and A56 all meet, and that junction is the reason Bury journeys go wrong. In the morning peak the approach can hold traffic for a quarter of an hour, and works there have a long history. Heading for the airport we sometimes leave the motorway at junction 17 and use the A56 and A5103 instead, which is no shorter but is often far more predictable.

North of the town the valley narrows quickly. The A56 through Ramsbottom and up to Edenfield is busy on weekend evenings, and Bridge Street fills with restaurant traffic from seven. Event weekends on the East Lancashire Railway bring more people into Ramsbottom and Summerseat than the roads comfortably hold, and parking disappears entirely. In winter the moorland roads over Holcombe and towards Haslingden hold ice, so we keep to the A56 for anything time-critical.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
