In a car, coats and bags stay in the boot, a tired child sleeps between stops, and an afternoon downpour alters the plan instead of finishing it.

Four hours through to a full day covers most appetites, and a day can reach beyond the city to Windsor, Oxford, Bath or Stonehenge.
