The A590 is the whole story. Between Barrow and junction 36 of the M6 it switches between dual and single carriageway repeatedly, and the single sections near Greenodd, Newby Bridge and the Ulverston approaches are where the time disappears. One slow vehicle can cost twenty minutes with no safe way past. Friday afternoons and summer Saturdays are the worst of it, since Lakes traffic uses the same junction. Locally, the yard sets the rhythm. Shift changes put a great deal of traffic onto Bridge Road, Michaelson Road and the approaches to Walney Bridge within a short window, and the bridge is the only crossing to the island. Winter weather off the Irish Sea brings crosswinds and spray to the exposed coastal stretches, and the A595 north towards Whitehaven is slower than its length on the map implies.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
