Looking like a fast road, the A69 to Newcastle is nothing of the sort. Across the Tyne valley it alternates dual with single carriageway, runs into Haltwhistle and Hexham traffic, and slows behind lorries wherever overtaking is limited. For an airport departure we allow an hour and three quarters rather than the hour and a quarter a map will hand you. Heading south-east, the alternative is the A66 east to Scotch Corner, badly exposed to wind and snow at Stainmore.

For most of the year, the M6 north of Penrith counts among the quietest motorways in England, which makes its exceptions memorable: high winds restrict the Shap section for high-sided vehicles, and snow can hit it while Carlisle itself stays clear. Going south, the real delays start far off, around Preston and along the Cheshire stretch. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
