The retail calendar in London
Nothing moves on a Saturday in the West End, and nothing is harder to book at short notice either; the same shopping takes half as long on a weekday morning. The sales in late December and June, the fortnight before Christmas, and the days around a bank holiday all go early. Beyond those, two or three days of notice generally does it.
Book an out-of-town outlet day further ahead, above all at weekends and during the sale weeks, when the roads out crawl in both directions and a full-day car is the only comfortable way of managing it. Where your plans hang on an appointment you have not yet secured, take the car for the day you are hoping for; letting it go afterwards is easier than finding one on a Friday in December.
