Crewe's rail connections are why many of our journeys here begin on a platform, and a car waiting outside turns a change of trains into a door-to-door run. West Coast services can be disrupted at short notice, and when they are the road becomes the sensible option: London is three and a quarter to four and a quarter hours, Birmingham a little over an hour. We keep the collection flexible where a connection is uncertain rather than fixing it too tightly.

The M6 through Cheshire is the least predictable stretch of motorway in the region. Between junctions 16 and 19, and again around the Thelwall Viaduct further north, delays appear with very little warning and the managed sections can drop to a crawl for miles. The A500 links Crewe to junction 16 quickly, but that junction itself queues at peak times. For an airport run we allow a genuine cushion rather than trusting a clean map.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
