The A591 is the only real road through the central Lakes, and in July, August and over the bank holidays it carries far more traffic than it was ever built for. The stretch between Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere can crawl from late morning into the early evening, with the Rydal narrows and the Ambleside junctions the worst of it. We move guests early or late by preference, and if a schedule depends on crossing that road at two o'clock in August we will say so plainly.

The passes are a separate matter altogether. Kirkstone, on the A592 towards Ullswater, is steep, exposed and closed by snow several times most winters, while Hardknott and Wrynose are unsuitable for a large saloon in any season. Wet autumn weather brings standing water to the low road at Rydal Water, and the fell becks rise quickly. We keep to the A591 and A593 for anything with a flight or a train attached, and treat the scenic route as a pleasure in its own right.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
