Junction 36 of the M6 is the gate to the southern Lakes, and it is where the region's traffic converges. On a summer Saturday both the A590 and the A591 leave it, and the queues can reach back onto the motorway by late morning. Northbound the M6 climbs to Shap beyond junction 39, exposed enough that high winds and snow affect it several times each winter while Kendal itself sits clear. On long runs we watch the forecast as closely as the traffic.

West of the town the A591 to Windermere climbs steadily and carries every visitor heading for the lake, which makes late mornings and Sunday afternoons in season genuinely slow. The A6 north over Shap summit is the historic alternative and a fine drive, but it is high, remote and among the first roads closed in bad weather. Kendal is quiet by nine in the evening, and a departure before seven is usually the fastest journey of the day.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
