Junction 19 of the M6 is at the edge of the town, and it is a mixed blessing. It gives quick access north and south, but the M6 through Cheshire is genuinely unpredictable, and the stretch between junctions 18 and 20 can lose twenty minutes to an incident with no realistic diversion. For the airport we avoid it entirely and use the A537 and M56 instead. Heading north towards Preston we check before committing, since the Thelwall Viaduct compounds anything already wrong.

Tatton Park hosts large events through the summer, and the flower show in particular fills the roads around the Knutsford and Rostherne entrances for several days, with queues along the A50 and back through the town. Country fairs and concerts produce a smaller version of the same. On those weekends we collect from the far side of the town and route around King Street entirely. Outside event season the evenings are quiet and a car can wait almost anywhere.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
