The A56 is the road everything defaults to and the road everything sits in. Between the Broadheath junction and the M60 at Sale it slows badly from half past seven, and the return leg after five is worse. For an early airport departure we use the A538 through Hale and Ringway instead, which avoids the whole corridor. Coming back from town late at night the A56 is transformed, and the same run takes half the time.

Hale rewards a little planning. The village streets around Ashley Road are narrow, heavily parked and busy with restaurant trade from seven onwards, so we agree a specific corner rather than idle outside a door. Bowdon's larger houses often have gated entrances and gravel turning circles, which we like to know about beforehand. On a Manchester matchday the M60 between junctions 7 and 9 carries the whole of south Trafford, and we allow for it rather than hoping.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
