Everything defaults to the A56, and everything then sits in it. Between the Broadheath junction and the M60 at Sale it slows badly from half past seven, with the return leg after five worse still. For an early airport departure we take the A538 through Hale and Ringway instead, dodging the corridor altogether. Late at night, coming back from town, the A56 is a transformed road and the same run takes half the time.

A little planning pays off in Hale. Village streets around Ashley Road are narrow, heavily parked and busy with restaurant trade from seven onwards, so we agree a specific corner instead of idling outside a door. The larger houses in Bowdon often come with gated entrances and gravel turning circles, and we like knowing about those beforehand. On a Manchester matchday the M60 between junctions 7 and 9 carries the whole of south Trafford, so we allow for it rather than hope.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
