A few miles north-west of the city, along the A696, one terminal handles everything, and the road runs virtually to its door. For sheer speed out of a city centre, hardly any airport in the country beats it. The Metro comes out here as well, though with cases and a family in tow the car is by far the kinder choice, and drop-off leaves only a short walk to the check-in desks inside.
In the arrivals hall a name board goes up, your chauffeur meets you there, and the luggage travels out to the car. Book with the flight number and the pickup is planned around the published arrival time along with the clearance time we would ordinarily allow. For an airport of this size Newcastle clears people quickly, so as a rule we are the ones waiting, not you.
Leaving from the city seldom asks for more than half an hour, although the A167 and the Central Motorway both stiffen around the school run, and that gets allowed for. Guests staying further afield, in Hexham or out on the coast at Alnmouth, have their collection time set by the road itself rather than by mileage, which gives a different figure and a far more useful one.
North is where our favourite drives from here go: the Northumberland coast, Alnwick, Bamburgh and the castles, or west along the line of the wall towards Hexham. Durham makes a comfortable run south. Newcastle and Gateshead are minutes off. And in good weather the road from this terminal up to Edinburgh gives you a genuinely handsome two hours.

Set-down for departures happens beside the terminal, and the arrangement favours a car that pulls in, unloads and goes. Out of the city, the A696 runs past Ponteland; from the coast and Sunderland the usual line is the A19 and the tunnel; from Durham it is the A1 the whole way. The tunnel is the one liable to surprise you, so anything crossing the river carries a margin.
Regional airport, regional catchment, and the upshot is that a fair number of the journeys are long ones. Edinburgh lies a couple of hours north in ordinary conditions, with Manchester Airport a longer haul south whenever a connection insists on it, and the Lake District, the Borders and the Yorkshire coast all follow from there naturally enough. Early departures begin in the small hours, when the roads out through Kingston Park are completely clear.

Short drive, so people leave it late, and what catches them out is the morning peak on the way in. Somewhere between half seven and nine the roads towards Ponteland take the school run and the commute at once, and twenty minutes turns into forty with no warning at all. Setting the time around that suits us better than arguing about it afterwards.
Availability up here tracks the northern calendar. Summer, the Christmas fortnight and any weekend built around a big fixture go first, and the larger vehicles disappear soonest, since groups are the ones booking them. Outside those spells a car can usually be found at short notice, midweek in particular.
