The single mile of Lake Road between Windermere and Bowness is the choke point of the entire southern Lakes. From late morning to early evening in season it moves slowly, and the car parks around the pier fill first. We approach lakeside hotels from whichever direction avoids the worst of it, and for anything with a train or a flight attached we leave earlier than a guest usually expects. Before nine in the morning that same road is empty.

The ferry between Bowness and Far Sawrey is a genuine short cut and an unreliable one: it takes a limited number of vehicles, queues can be long in summer, and it does not run in high winds or during maintenance. We treat it as a pleasure rather than a route. Kirkstone Pass north on the A592 is steep and closes for snow most winters, and the A591 near Grasmere has a history of flooding after prolonged rain.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
