The Roodee sits immediately beside the walls, which makes Chester races unusually central and unusually disruptive. On a race day the roads around Nuns Road, Grosvenor Road and the New Crane Street approach fill from late morning, and the ring road slows with them; the exit afterwards is worse than the arrival. We collect from the far side of the river or from Grosvenor Park and walk you the short distance, rather than promise a kerbside pickup that will be moved on.

Away from racing, the two things to plan for are the A55 and the tunnels. The A55 is the artery into north Wales and slows around the Northop and Halkyn stretches, particularly on summer Fridays and bank holidays heading west. For Liverpool we choose between the Kingsway and Queensway tunnels according to the hour, and the M53 approach at junction 12 can queue through the morning. Chester's park and ride roads are busiest between four and six.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
