Racing at Chester is unusually central, and unusually disruptive with it, because the Roodee lies right up against the walls. Late morning on a race day, Nuns Road, Grosvenor Road and the approach along New Crane Street begin to fill, and the ring road stiffens with them. Leaving is harder than arriving. Racing aside, two things want planning for: the A55 and the tunnels. Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
