Being this close to a terminal changes how we plan. For a first departure of the day we would still leave Barry around ninety minutes ahead rather than an hour, because the A4226 has only one realistic alternative and the roundabouts at Weycock Cross and Culverhouse Cross carry the whole of the Vale's morning traffic. Coming the other way, arrivals are met inside the terminal, and the short hop home means a late flight costs nothing but patience.

Summer weekends are the local complication. When the weather turns, traffic for Barry Island backs up along the A4055 and Ffordd y Mileniwm, the island car parks fill well before lunch, and the causeway slows in both directions. We use Broad Street or an agreed side street off Harbour Road instead of attempting the promenade. Dock and estate business is the mirror image, quiet at weekends and busiest through the working morning.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does.
